Kali Linux is a Linux distribution designed for digital forensics and penetration testing. It is maintained and funded by Offensive Security, a provider of world-class information security training and penetration testing services. Kali Linux is one of the most widely used tools in the industry for computer security research and penetration testing, including its namesake tool: Kali - Official Site The "kali linux highly compressed" file was uploaded to this website on Monday 7th June 2018 at 06:32pm EDT from Unknown. This package contains the full Kali Linux operating system which includes all of its tools, applications, libraries and drivers. All Kali Linux packages for desktop and server are included in this package. Kali Linux is not to be confused with other distributions such as BackTrack or Backbox. The first versions of both distributions were originally created by various members of an internet forum called IRCnet's #backtrack channel ("BackTrack was originally written by Didier Stevens"). After the two distributions became popular, IRCnet began removing the channel's resources including some of the distribution's .tar.gz archives. The channel then re-organized into a group of forums called #kali, where both distributions were still hosted. Some time after that IRCnet changed its name to #kali IRC network, where both distributions are hosted by members of the network. The word "backtrack" is also an informal term for any computer forensics software related to media piracy or copyright violation. Kali Linux has been criticized for its closed-source firmware. The Kali release claims to have no proprietary drivers, but does not allow the user to modify the kernel, which in turn prevents the use of non-free firmware. Some users have modified the kernel or flashed a custom ROM in their devices, but this is technically illegal under US law. Security researcher Chris Evans listed kali linux as one of "13 high profile projects hacked in 2013" but found that it was not based on Debian. There are several forums where Kali Linux users gather to share information about distribution, tools and workarounds using unofficial repositories or custom builds thereof. On the Kali forums one can find a lot of information including tutorials, how to's and troubleshooting. There is also support provided by the forum members.
